- Read a newspaper article from the Module 3 Articles for Summary folder; draft and revise a 2-paragraph Summary Response Essay in a Word doc. using MLA formatting, identify and correct writing errors; and reflect on the writing process
- Practice providing evidence and analysis in paragraphs
In your essay, you will need to follow these directions:
- If possible, print your chosen newspaper article from the Module 3 Activities and Assessments folder. Read and underline the main points of the article, using the instructions from Chapter 18 in your textbook.

- Write the first paragraph of your essay as a summary. Remember to include the following:
- The first sentence should include author, title, and source
- Describe the main idea of the article
- Include the most important supporting ideas
- Write the second paragraph as a response to the article. Remember to include the following:
- What’s your overall opinion about the article? Was it written well, or did it not fully cover the topic? Explain.
- Did the author seem trustworthy? Did the author use unbiased language or did the author seem overly biased? Explain.
- Would you recommend this article to others?
Your essay must adhere to the following guidelines:
- 300-350 words in length
- Double-spaced, Times New Roman/Calibri, 12-point font
- MLA format
- 1-inch margins
- Use MLA in-text citations for all references to your source (see video in Module 3 Learning Resources)
- Have a Works Cited page (use citation provided with each article)
- Use correct punctuation, grammar, and mechanics
- Use complete sentences
- Submit a rough draft to Tutor.com and make revisions using advice from your tutor

Fact from Fiction
In the article “Why Students Can’t Google Their Way to the Truth,” Sam Wineburg and Sarah McGrew argue that students need to learn how to figure out what is true or false online. Wineburg and McGrew claim that if you rely just on a single website or Google’s tops listings, you can be deceived. In fact, the authors suggest that students need to learn the strategies of professional fact checkers in order to evaluate online material accurately. Wineburg and McGrew describe how fact checkers leave websites to evaluate them because the internet is a resource that can you use to verify information. Fact checkers also look past the first page of Google results to sort out reliable websites (Wineberg and McGrew). The authors argue that students have to learn how to find the truth because they are not taught how to do it. Others may disagree with the authors, claiming that young people can navigate the internet well because they have lived their whole with internet access. However, research from Northwestern University and Stanford show that young people make mistakes when evaluating sources (Wineburg and McGrew). Therefore, learning these strategies is a valuable lesson for today’s young people.Summary Response Essay Question
The authors have written an informative argument on the topic of finding the truth online. Their credentials as scholars suggest that they have a great deal of expertise in their field. According to their extensive research, the evidence appears to be very credible. Despite the overwhelming inability of students to accurately evaluate sources online, at least the authors offer some hope that students can learn new skills to sort fact from fiction. The authors do not ridicule young people for not understanding how to navigate the internet, and instead offer suggestions to help. This prevents the authors from sounding overly biased. In my view, I agree with authors that it is very difficult to navigate online sources, and everyone could use some strategies to do it better.
