Note that a developing country is one that is classified by the World Bank as ‘Low Income’, ‘Lower Middle Income’, or ‘Upper Middle Income’.

(A1) For a developing country of your choice present (using a graph) the country’s ‘GDP per capita (constant 2005US$)’ to (constant 2010US). Describe how this variable has changed through time and explain any unusual pattern/changes. (Approx. 250 word words)

Part B

For this part of the assessment you will need to access data from the United Nations Development Program’s Human Development Reports and use Excel.

You will also need to access other sources. Make sure you reference any papers/material that you cite.

The following data are provided for the (fictional) country of Econistan:

Life expectancy is 72.1 years

Mean years of schooling is 6.8 years

Expected years of schooling is 12.2 years

GNI per capita (PPP) is $10,420

(B1) Calculate Econistan’s Human Development Index, showing all of your workings.

When calculating the component indices use the maximum and minimum values provided in the 2014 Human Development Report.

(B2) According to the (latest) UNDP classification, does Econistan fall into the “High”, “Medium” or “Low” human development category? Which country has the most similar HDI score to Econistan?

Download the Human Development Index data for the period 1980 to 2013 for a developing country of your choice. The country should be different from the one you chose for Part A of this assessment.

(B3) Plot the HDI values (with year on the x axis). Research the reasons behind the shape of your HDI plot. (Approx. 200 words)

Download the 2014 data for both the HDI and Gross national income (GNI) per capita (PPP) data for all countries for which data are available. Data can be accessed from the website above. You will find the relevant data in the link to Table 1.

(B4) Plot the HDI values against the corresponding GNI per capita (PPP) values

(B5) Describe and interpret the relationship between the two variables. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each as a measure of welfare? (Approx. 300 words)
